One of the most riveting and FREEING statements I have ever heard was this:
YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS. One of my teachers at my yoga teacher training said that and it about blew my mind. As someone who struggled with depression since my early teens, I just always believed that whatever my mind told me was absolute truth! It didn't even occur to me that that was not the case. If I'm thinking it, it must be true!! Duh. That's like saying, "everything you read on the internet is true." Your mind is an aspect of who you are but it is not WHO you are. Sometimes the mind regurgitates some craziness and then you take it and run with it. That's how it was for me, anyway. My mind would toss something ridiculous and sad in my conscious awareness and then I would think, "Omg, yes. Let me now recall one thousand and five different reasons I have to be sad." Here's the thing, (I'm gonna talk about this more in my Insta Live tomorrow 11/4 @ 10pm - so check it out if you want more on this topic.) you have the authority and the intelligence to create space between you and your thoughts. You can, in fact, call B.S. on any of the thoughts you have. And you definitely do not have to participate in their shenanigans. Usually, I say something out loud along the lines of, "Oh, ok mind. I see you're in a mood today. Thank you for bringing that to my attention but we will choose to focus on this other thing that is way more positive and productive." Even if you say that 1000 times a day to begin with. We do have between 40,000-60,000 thoughts a day so percentage wise,1000 is pretty good. Just sit with and think about (yes, ironic, I know) the TRUTH that you are not your thoughts. You are soooo much more than what goes on between your ears. Just ask your body. ;) (More on talking to your body in another email.)
